How to Become a Chiropractor?

You are here: Home / Blog / How to Become a Chiropractor?

July 20, 2020 //  by Amit Kumar

A chiropractor is a doctor who provides care to patients by adjusting the spines or treatment of musculoskeletal and nervous systems. Chiropractors manipulate the spine to realign the patient’s spinal joint. So the patient gets better without using drugs and surgery.

Patients visit chiropractors to treat joints or back issues. Some patients use chiropractic to relieve allergies and digestive disorders. Chiropractic also uses other techniques like massage therapy to treat patients.

Like other general and specialized doctors, they perform different works. Patient health history is gathered, neurological, physical, and orthopaedic examinations are performed. Also, laboratory tests and x-rays tools are used to analyze and diagnose the patient’s condition.

    • Take the National Board Exam
    • License for Chiropractors

Get a College Degree

Before you attend a chiropractor school, you will be required to earn a bachelor’s degree. You can select a college that offers a substantial science degree or pre-medical program. Research different schools to know which one is best for you. You can take a degree in exercise science, biology, kinesiology, or similar subject.

For individuals looking to work in the medical field, courses in chemistry, biology, and physics will be essential. If you are given an opportunity, you can study topics and courses related to kinesiology and sports medicine. A course in sociology and psychology will help a student earn a more comprehensive understanding of society and people.

Join Chiropractor School

To complete a chiropractor school, you will typically take four years. The course is rigorous, and you will gain in-depth information about the human body through clinical training and classes.

The four years are divided into two major phases; the first two years are classroom and lab-based while the other two years are spent in clinics. You will listen to lectures, read textbooks, and study cadavers in the lab and use a microscope to learn how people bodywork.

You will be taught how to observe a patient, treat symptoms, and look for a problem. Students then learn how to make chiropractic adjustments to the backs and necks. Nevertheless, you will be taught how to read a blood test.

Your lab experience will be crucial since it goes beyond the basics. Textbooks represent what people’s bodies look like, but by using real bodies, variances assist students in recognizing issues the patient may have.

Generally, a chiropractic course has the following phases:

  • Basic science. This stage involves learning the complexity of body systems. Discipline courses like anatomy, biochemistry, and physiology are taught.
  • Clinical and chiropractic science. In this stage, students learn physical examination, physician-patient interaction, aetiology, treatment, and diagnosis. It is in this phase you will learn business-focused coursework.
  • Clinical internship. This is the last phase that involves a lot of practice. As an intern, you get in real-world clinical settings.

Note that clinical training may be done at a campus or a community clinic, depending on the school you attend.

Take the National Board Exam

The N.B.C.E. administers the chiropractor’s exam, and the test is given twice every year. The exam consists of three parts. The first part has 110 multiple-choice questions related to general anatomy, physiology, spinal anatomy, pathology, chemistry, public health, and microbiology.

But the second part comprises 110 multiple-choice questions. This part covers general diagnosis, diagnostic imaging, neuromusculoskeletal diagnosis, associated clinical sciences, and chiropractic practice.

Then the third part also consists of 110 multiple-choice questions and ten case vignettes covering diagnosis, clinical laboratory, case management, chiropractic techniques, case history, and physical examination.

License for Chiropractors

A graduate is required to get a permit to work in the state they intend to work to become a practising chiropractor. Regulations for licensing may vary from State to State. Therefore, you can research your state’s laws before completing the chiropractic course and be sure you met all conditions.

You apply for a license after passing the national test. Some states need proof of graduation from Chiropractic College and the score you got from the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners.

Critical information required for licensing includes;

  • licensing fees,
  • security check requirements,
  • additional certification requirements,
  • And malpractice insurance requirements.
  •  Each state provides a licensing link.

Consider Specializing

Specialization helps a chiropractor to diagnose and treat specific illnesses better. For example, you can specialize in sports medicines, chronic diseases, injuries or complex occupational injuries, occupational health, paediatrics, development disorder, acupuncture, and radiology. These specialization training sessions require about 300 to 400 hours.

Start Practicing as a Chiropractor

After acquiring your license, you can run your own business or get hired by a larger chiropractor’s office or become a partner. But the more natural way is to work with a company.

This is quicker than starting your own business. Setting a new office might take longer than working with another chiropractor who requires you to sign a contract only.
