What Are the Available Types of Work Permits in Canada?

Canada seeks to attract talented foreigners to come to work in the country. One of the first steps of beginning this dream process is to first apply for a Canadian work permit.

However, to successfully apply for a Canadian work permit, one has to know the various types of available work permits. The country has a system of work permits that differs based on someone’s occupation and the reason they are moving to Canada.

Some Important Details of the Canadian Work Permit

The Canadian work permit comes with four different conditions. It displays:

  • Your current employer
  • The nature of work you currently have
  • The location the work permit holder is allowed to work; and
  • The permitted time duration that you can legally work in Canada.

What Are the Different Types of Work Permits Available in Canada?

Canada has two main types of work permits. Depending on the holder’s qualification and type of job, a person’s work permit could fall under two various work permit categories.

The country has two primary types of work permits. They are the Employer Specific Work Permit and Open Work Permit.

The Canadian Open Work Permit

The Canadian Open Work Permit is a type of work permit that gets designated to immigrants looking for a particular employer. The open work permit allows the immigrant to work for a specific duration of time.

The open work permit type comes in two subcategories. They are the Restricted and the unrestricted permits. There is a distinguishing feature between both kinds of work permits. The primary difference between both types of work permits lies in the unrestricted work permit.

The unrestricted work permit allows the holder to take on any job and work in any given location. However, the restricted work permit does not grant this benefit. The Canadian Restricted license lets the holder work in a particular job. Additionally, this work permit limits the location the holder can work.

In Canada, several visa schemes make use of Openwork permits. These visa schemes include:

  • The international co-op program;
  • Provincial Nominee Program;
  • Canadian Experience Class;
  • Federal Skilled Worker Program;
  • International Experience Canada;
  • Young Professionals Visa; and
  • Working Holiday Visa;

The Canadian Employer-specific Work Permit

This type of work permit is pretty common in the country. It is the type of work permit that allows the holder to work based on the specifications contained in the work permit. The work permit comes with very vital information.

Some of this information includes the name of your employer, the work permit’s validity, and the work permit holder’s work. Just like the name suggests, the employer-specific work permit allows the holder to work in Canada based on the details contained in the work permit.

The Canadian Bridging Open Work Permit

In Canada, there is a particular type of work permit called the bridging open work permit. The work permit is a different work permit that allows the holder to work while they wait for the status of their permanent resident application.

Anyone can be eligible for this type of work permit if they have applied through any of the following continuous residence programs in Canada.

Immigrants can get the unique bridge open work permit if they have applied for the following programs:

  • Programs involved with taking care of older people that have high medical needs;
  • programs that allow you to care for children;
  • The Canadian experience program;
  • The Federal skilled trades program; and
  • The Provincial Nomination Programs (PNPs).

Furthermore, to apply for this particular work permit, candidates will have to meet specific requirements.

People get expected to apply for this work permit if they are living in the country already. People get to ask if their work permits have just four months left before expiration. Also, people with valid work permits can apply.

Is there a qualification process for the Canadian work permit?

The Canadian work permit application comes with an eligibility process. Not everyone is qualified to apply for the procedure. Before applying for one, applicants have to check if they meet the eligibility requirements.

How Immigrants Can Get the Canadian Work Permit?

There are different ways someone can get to work in the country. However, the most straightforward approach to this is through the permanent residency program of the country.

This permanent residency status gets attained if people apply through the country’s Express Entry program. Additionally, they can also access permanent residency through the Provincial Nominee Program.

How to Apply for a Work Permit in Canada?

First Step: Choose Your Work Permit Type

The first step involved in the process of applying for a work permit consists of the applicant’s type of job. They get to choose between the two main types of work permits available in the country.

These two types of work permits are the Employer specific work permit and the Openwork permit. Immigrants who moved to Canada through the Express Entry system can live and work in any country provided they have an open work permit.

Second Step: You Need to Check If You’re Eligible for a Canadian Work Permit

When applying for a Canadian work permit, there are specific requirements that the applicant will have to meet. For applicants to hand in their work permit application, they must:

  • Show sufficient proof that they can get out of the country on the expiration of the work permit;
  • Have enough funds to be able to support themselves and their family in Canada;
  • They should have no criminal record;
  • They should be in good health.

Third Step: Applying for the Canadian Work Permit

When applying for your work permit in Canada, it is best to apply online. The online application process is considerably faster and cheaper. There are no delays in terms of extra documentation. The online process also ensures a complete application.

The Processing Time for the Canadian Work Permit

The amount of time it takes to process a work permit in Canada depends on the applicant’s home country. The time it takes to process a work permit is about two to thirty-three weeks. However, the processing times for applicants can get reduced if they go through an accredited agency.

Conclusion

The above piece summarizes some of the most relevant details of the application of a Canadian work permit.
