Who Needs a Student Visa in Japan?

If you are planning to stay in Japan for more than 90 days, then the student visa is the right option for you. It is also commonly known as Ryugaku. The permit is valid for up to 2 years from the date of entry. However, it can be extended depending on the duration of your enrolled course.

The student visa also makes you eligible to take up part-time jobs for up to 28 hours every week. However, there are a few restrictions on the type of work that you are allowed to take up.

What Are the Documents That You Need to Apply For?

Like any other visa application process, getting a Ryugaku requires that you submit a set of documents including:

  • A filled and signed Visa application form along with a valid passport.
  • Educational materials and Curriculum Vitae (CV).
  • Experience certificate.
  • Certificate of Eligibility – The immigration office issues this to the student at the request of the enrolled educational university that he/she will be attending in Japan.
  • 2*2 inch photograph taken not more than six months ago.

And that’s it. By getting these documents in order, you can get your visa application process started with ease.

The Application Process

Though getting a Ryugaku visa is relatively easy compared to other countries, it can take up to 6 months. Therefore, it is essential to plan your application process well in advance to avoid a last-minute rush.

Download the VISA Application Form

  • The Japan visa application form is available in the PDF format. You can save the form and complete it.
  • In the application you will be required to fill your name, passport number etc. along with your purpose to visit the country.

Certificate of Eligibility

A Certificate of eligibility is issued by the immigration office to the students at the request of the university he/she would be attending. While the university will send the student a letter of acceptance, it is only the certificate of eligibility that is accepted by the visa issuance authority as valid proof. It can take approximately two months to be issued.

Once you have all the required documents in order, you can get your visa application process started by submitting them at your local Japanese Embassy / Consulate. If you are planning to take the assistance of a travel agent or professional firm for help with your visa, you must ensure that they are recognized and approved by the Japanese Embassy/Consulate.

How Much Does it Cost?

The visa application process is not fixed and may vary depending on the country that you are applying from. However, it costs around 3000 yen for a single entry visa. Once you have submitted your Visa application through your local Japanese embassy or consulate, you can track your visa application online. Use the provided reference number for tracking the same.

The visa process itself takes a minimum of 5 working days, making the process quick and streamlined. However, getting the necessary documentation in order can be more time consuming and difficult. Therefore, it is essential to submit your application in advance to ensure that you have sufficient time for preparation.
