How to Apply for a Malaysian Visa?

Malaysia, located in Southeast Asia, is an incredible melting pot of cultures. Malaysia offers a pivotal location that should not be overlooked when touring Southeast Asia, bordering everything from Thailand and the South China Sea to Brunei and Indonesia. Malaysia’s variety is what makes it so intriguing. In the same nation, you may see bustling contemporary cities, colonial buildings, relax on some of the world’s most stunning beaches, and climb through lush green rainforests. And to visit this country, you will require a Malaysia Visa.

What is a Malaysia visa?

A visa is a stamp in a foreigner’s passport or other recognized travel document confirming that the holder has sought permission to visit Malaysia.

Foreign citizens who need a Visa to enter Malaysia must apply for one in advance at any Malaysian Representative Office overseas.

An approved visa does not ensure that the holder will be permitted to enter Malaysia.

Types of Visa in Malaysia

Foreign nationals can get the following sorts of visas from the Malaysian government:

1. Single Entry Visa

The Single Entry Visa is provided to foreign citizens who need a visa to enter Malaysia, primarily for social purposes. The Single Entry Visa is generally valid for one entry and three months from the date of issuing.

2. Multiple Entry Visa

The Multiple Entry Visa is granted to foreign citizens who need a visa to enter Malaysia for business or government-to-government purposes.

The Multiple Entry Visa is typically valid for three to twelve months from the date of issuing. Citizens of India and the People’s Republic of China who intend to enter Malaysia on a Social Visit may apply for the Multiple Entry Visa.

The Multiple Entry Visa is valid for one year.

Each entrance is only valid for 30 days, and stay extensions are not permitted.

The following conditions apply to the Multiple Entry Visa:

  • The applicant must demonstrate that he or she has adequate finances to stay in Malaysia.
  • The candidate must have a confirmed and valid return ticket.
  • Multiple entry visas are not available to tour groups.

3. Transit Visa

The Transit Visa is given to foreign people who need a visa to enter Malaysia on their way to another country. Foreign nationals in transit who do not leave the airport and continue their travel to their next destination on the same flight do not need a transit visa.

4. Transit without Visa

The Transit Without Visa is only valid after passing through Malaysian immigration and is limited to 120 hours in Malaysia.

However, the granting of Transit without Visa is entirely at the discretion of Malaysia Immigration, even if the guest(s) fulfil all of the qualifying conditions.

Countries eligible for Transit without Visa

  • Sri Lanka
  • India
  • Pakistan
  • Bangladesh

  • Bangladesh
  • Bhutan
  • China
  • India
  • Montenegro
  • Myanmar
  • Nepal
  • Pakistan
  • Serbia
  • Sri Lanka

Most visa-required nations must apply at a Malaysian Representative Office Abroad or through a licensed visa application firm.

You may be able to submit your application in person or by mail, depending on your country. You must include a photo of yourself in the application form that meets Malaysia visa photo standards.

5. Pay the Processing Fees

When applying for a Malaysian visa, you must include supporting papers. A non-refundable Malaysia visa fee is also required to cover visa processing.

The mode of payment varies based on the Malaysian Representative Office (Embassy or Consulate) where you are applying.

When you appear to submit your application, some Malaysian Representative Offices will need you to pay the Malaysia visa fee in cash.

Others will only take money in the form of a bank draft made payable to the relevant Embassy or Consulate.

To find out how they will collect money, go to the local Malaysian Representative Office website.

Malaysia work visa fees

If you wish to work in Malaysia, you will need to pay visa charges in your home country and the Malaysian Work Pass fee.

Malaysian work Pass costs vary based on the period of the Pass.

Malaysia student visa fee

For each year (or part of a year) of study, international students must pay a Malaysia Student Pass price of RM 60.

As a result, for a three-year term, your Malaysia Student Pass will cost RM 180.

Malaysia family visa fees

Foreign national family members of Malaysian citizens or ex-pats can visit the country using the Dependent’s Pass or the Long Term Social Visit Pass.

Malaysia Visa On Arrival Fees

If you are an Indian or Chinese national, you are eligible for a Malaysian Visa On Arrival. A Malaysian Visa On Arrival costs $100 in processing fees.

6. Wait for the processing

You may be able to track the status of your application online, depending on your country and the location where you are applying.

If your Malaysia visa application is granted, you must return your passport with the visa attached.

After that, you are free to travel to Malaysia.

Only because your visa is valid for 30 days does not guarantee that your pass will be good for the same amount of time.  Keep in mind that, even if you have a visa for Malaysia, it is up to the Immigration Officer at the port of entry to decide whether or not you can enter.

Depending on your purpose of travel, they will issue you an appropriate Pass stating the number of days you are permitted to stay in Malaysia.

For example, if you want to visit Malaysia for tourism, you will be issued a Short Term Social Visit Pass.

Malaysia Visa Application Processing Time

The processing period for a Malaysian visa varies on your nation and the mode you are applying, the time of year, and if you have all the requisite papers.

If you are applying online (eVisa), the procedure should take no more than 100 hours, ie.

four (4) days

Your visa should be completed within 48 to 72 hours if you apply through eNTRI.

If you apply by hand, the processing time is determined by the office that receives your application.

Nonetheless, the Malaysia visa is usually processed within 7-8 working days.

When to Apply?

One can apply for a Malaysian visa up to one month before the intended departure date.

Malaysia Visa without Reference vs Visa with Reference

The purpose of travel determines the difference between the Malaysian Visa Without Reference and the Malaysian Visa With Reference.

The Malaysian High Commission issues the Malaysia Visa Without Reference without previous authorization from a Malaysian governmental entity.

This visa is usually issued for social visits or tourism purposes, and it is only valid for one entry.

The Malaysia Visa With Reference requires prior approval from Malaysia’s Immigration Department before it can be issued.

If you wish to travel to Malaysia to further your education, join a family member, or work, you will be issued with this sort of visa.

Malaysian Visa vs Malaysian Pass

A Malaysian Visa enables the holder to go to Malaysia, whereas a Malaysia Pass specifies the purpose of the trip.

Some Passes are issued at the port of entry upon arrival, while others, such as an Employment Pass, must be obtained before applying for a visa.

As a result, the Malaysia Passes are categorized as follows:

Transit Visas for Malaysia

If you need to enter Malaysia to board another flight on your route to another country, you must apply for a transit visa.

Tourist visa for Malaysia.

If you intend to visit Malaysia for tourism and are subject to the Malaysian visa regime, you will need to get a tourist visa.

Short Term Social Visit Pass,

which you will be given when you arrive in Malaysia. This Pass will be issued if you are travelling for a short period, such as visiting family/friends, tourism, a business trip, attending a seminar, taking an exam, competing in a sporting event, etc.

Employment Pass,

allowing you to work in a Malaysian firm or organization. Before you may apply, the Expatriate Committee (EC) or another Malaysian official must authorize your position in the firm.

Dependant Passes

are granted to dependents of Employment Pass holders (spouses, children under 18, or elderly parents)

Passport for Visitors (Temporary Employment).

If you have found a job in Malaysia and wish to work in an allowed field or as a Foreign Domestic Helper, you must apply for this pass before you fly.

Passport for Visitors (Professional).

If you want to offer professional services or train in Malaysia for a short time, you must apply for this Pass.

Long Term Social Visit Pass,

which is provided to foreigners who meet the conditions and wish to stay in Malaysia for more than six months. This pass, however, does not allow you to work or become self-employed. If you are the spouse/partner of a Malaysian citizen, you can obtain this pass for up to 5 years, which is why it is also known as the Spouse Visa for Malaysia.

Malaysia Student Visa,

commonly known as the Student Pass.

If you wish to study in Malaysia, you must first apply for a Student Pass before travelling.

Residence Pass,

which is granted to highly skilled foreigners who will work in Malaysia for up to ten years.

You can only apply for a Residence Pass if you have previously worked in Malaysia for at least three years.

Visa Extension

A Malaysian single entry visa is only valid for 30 days and cannot be extended. A Social Visit Pass is also ineligible.

If you intend to stay in Malaysia for a while longer than your Pass, you must leave the country and apply for the proper Malaysian Visa/Pass.

An extension of a Social Visit Pass, on the other hand, may be possible in exceptional cases and only after careful consideration on a case-by-case basis.

For example, if you became ill, had an accident, or if a situation in your home country (such as a war) could endanger you if you returned, you could be granted an extension for your Social Visit Pass.

In such a case, you will be required to provide proof of your claim as well as a confirmed return ticket to your country of residence.
