Project Description

The Climate Change Act was amended last year to establish a target of zero greenhouse emissions for the UK by 2050. This implies that almost all energy uses will have to be sourced from zero-emissions electricity. However, since 99% of current transport energy demand is still supplied by fossil fuel combustion, how fast can we electrify all transport? What opportunities exist to reconfigure the transport system to provide future demand for mobility with more efficient use of resources? How can we minimise the disruption caused by the required changes in the transport sector in just 29 years?

This project will explore these questions and has the following research objectives: 1. Explore the role of electrification or carbon-free fuels and demand shared and integrated transport modes to reduce the future energy demand of the transport system; 2. Create metrics of disruption for possible required changes in transport mode, infrastructure requirement, change in travel demand for various trip purposes; 3. Identify innovation opportunities to deliver the least disruptive options for providing future mobility needs without emissions.

This PhD project will be closely linked with UK FIRES- a 5-year EPSRC Programme Grant, which focuses on the decarbonisation of the UK industry (www.ukfires.org).
