Disadvantages of Free College Education

June 1, 2019 //  by Amit Kumar

Has it ever crossed your mind if college education should be free? In the current scenario, this question might seem more significant. Lots of people have very strong ideas on the topic. In spite of everything, the impending generations’ future is what needs consideration.

Almost everyone approves that better education is one of the most significant factors to determine the future of various nations. However, if a free college education is a right way to achieve it, they are not so sure. Let’s have a look at what makes a free college education an unappealing prospect for many.

First, what is free education? Free education is education, which is funded by the government or other charitable establishments. These days, with the cost of attaining education increasing rapidly, countries like America have been taking steps towards providing a free college education. But how successful is the idea?

Where is the Money Coming From?

Is free college education really free? No, it’s not. Money has to come from somewhere. The answer is the taxes, mostly property taxes. Taxes will move up and the targeted taxpayers, whether they have college-going kids or not, will have to pay those taxes.

Who would have to pay the taxes may vary. It most likely would be the middle, upper-middle, and upper classes of the society. The point is that somebody would have to pay and carry the burden of money needed to provide a free college education.

The Trouble with Handling Finances

Newer generations might face difficulty in handling their finances. College life teaches you a lot and offers lots of learning experiences. A few of them is handling your money matters, building budget, and saving money. These learning experiences also help the students in their future life when they are working and making their own money.

Financial matters like student loans are usually the first things that students deal with. Paying off the loans in a well-timed manner will teach them a variety of skills that they could use when buying property or vehicles. With free education, they won’t have these experiences and might face troubles in the future.

More Quantity and Less Quality

With free education, students might begin to take colleges for granted. In addition, more people would go to college since it would be free. As a result, more money would have to be provided to the colleges and that means taxes pertaining to educational purpose might go up. It might also reduce the quality of education.

In addition, free education might also result in students withdrawing from more classes or not trying hard enough as they won’t be paying money for anything.

Value of College Degrees Might Diminish with more People Getting Them

A lot of people might not agree with it, but if more people get college degrees, the value of the degrees might go down. They might be considered less valuable. This might also lead to an increase in the underutilization of the skills as the workers with degrees might not be able to make full use of their educational qualifications.

What could be the Alternate Solution?

If not a free college education, then what? Perhaps some kind of alternative might exist to solve the affordability problem for the students. There might be a lot of options accessible to you. Nonetheless, the longer you wait to start your college education, the more opportunities you might lose.

Whether college education should be free or not, is a long debate. The best thing to do right now is to find out the best career-driven opportunities and use them to earn the best benefits.
