Danish Universities Allowed International Students to Return To Campuses

Students at Danish universities have been allowed to return to the campuses. They can meet each other and their lecturers again on campus after three months of distance education.

Ane Halsboe-Jørgensen, Denmark’s Minister of Education and Science, said that while the opening took place after the end of the spring semester, it would still allow students to get help with preparing for examination resits, with significant assignments, and would help universities schedule events before the start of the autumn semester.

Some students still have a few teaching hours left before the summer or have exams to take that require physical attendance, and university authorities will instruct them to come to the campus when needed.

The University of Copenhagen has accepted both international degree students as well as international exchange students, and according to Bruun beginning a university, the course would be considered a “good reason” to enter the country under the new border regulations.

International students can also get accommodation through the Copenhagen Housing Foundation. International exchanges of students were only suspended if they were cancelled overseas by the partner institution.
Many seem to have stayed in Denmark.

A University of Copenhagen survey found that 55% of international students went home shortly after the lockdown was imposed and 45% stayed in Denmark. Online courses continued to be followed by a full 88 per cent.

Universities must continue to bear in mind the national health guidelines, following the instructions issued by the Ministry of Higher Education and Research, respecting the one-meter rule and other advice. Universities are required to develop their systems to ensure that the guidelines are met and to set up posters and handwashing facilities around their campuses before students return.

As well as restrictions on the numbers that can come to classes, there must also be limits on the numbers in reading rooms and libraries, flexible working hours to minimize crowding on public transport, and exceptional security for workers, such as library staff, who have a lot of interaction with individuals.
