What Do You Mean by Democracy?

Democracy is a system of government where the entire population or members of the state have the opportunity to vote on the issues directly. It is a structure where rules are decided by common people but not by the state officials.

There is no doubt that it is an option associated with the United States. The founding fathers of the United States fear this idea of democratic rule. In general, democracies also occur in business structures and during personal decisions.

Primary pros and Cons of Democracy:

One of the primary pros of democracy is that it is one of the finest structures of government that has been created until now. Every person in this democratic community has a voice either on merit or elected by a state official.

It allows them to affect the policies and procedures that are specially designed for governing. Everyone can be active or inactive depending on their political process.

On the other hand, the main con of democracy is it is inefficient from governing. In a democratic society, everyone has the opportunity to offer their opinion as it takes a long time to make a final decision. In a true democracy, every person gets the right to vote on every decision before something could be achieved.

Here in this article, we have enlisted the additional pros and cons of democracy after having a look at different forms of government.

Pros of Democracy:

  • Inspires loyalty and patriotism
  • Encourages personal involvement
  • Promotes equality
  • Cease exploitation
  • Encourages the growth rate of GDP
  • Provides societal consistency
  • Impetus on centrism more than extremism
  • Decentralized the power of government Encourages the growth rate of GDP

Inspires Loyalty and Patriotism:

A democratic society helps people to stand up for justice and their rights. It also gives them a chance to express their thoughts, ideas, or perspectives in a safe and open environment. Success can easily be achieved because differences among people are celebrated instead of being feared.

This gives people a chance to work towards the improvement of policies and procedures that serve well for the welfare of people.

Promotes Equality:

Democratic culture gives equal rights of voting to every individual present in society. It eliminates gender discrimination among people. Even it also does not matter how much money you make.

It also does not matter where you belong to, where you are currently living, or from which religion everyone gets a vote with the same value. Moreover, it promotes the basic structure of equality on all vote levels.

Cease Exploitation:

Every form of government is at risk of exploitation utilizing power. Because power is equally distributed in a democracy so that no feels them inferior or superior regarding the division of absolute power. No matter what people have the most power in developed countries irrespective of what an elected politician says.

Encourages the Growth Rate of Gdp:

People in a democracy are given an equal chance to do whatever they want to achieve their milestones. If we allow the individuals of our nation to pursue their goals in this way, the GDP rate of a country gets higher. Households also get an opportunity to step forward and show their talents or ingrained skills.

Promotes Societal Consistency:

Voting on decisions allows individuals to maintain consistency in government as compared to those when there is the power used by elected politicians.

People who are given equal rights of voting they maintain the momentum they want on certain items. In this way, society can be shaped virtually into a better version so that everyone gets benefits.

Cons of Democracy:

Now let’s shift towards the cons present in democratic government.

  • It is expensive
  • Encourage herd mentality
  • Focuses on the needs of the majority
  • Requires well-informed voters
  • Need a lot of time
  • Democracy is a person first process

It Is Expensive:

Every vote cast in democratic government has some monetary cost associated with it. In the last few decades, it is noticed that monetary cost has exceeded $1 billion. However, at local levels, also it is unusual for city council, mayoral, and student election costs to exceed $100,000.

Encourage the Herd Mentality:

People don’t like to think outside of their box. Even more, than half of the people, the US maintain friendships with their political party, and the cycle goes on. States, communities, and neighbourhoods become polarized as people prefer staying in their boxes.

Moreover, democratic cultures open the idea of promoting mob thinking but discourage the idea of freedom and liability. Each policy or procedure in American administration is entirely based on us vs them scenario.

Need a Lot of Time:

Voting requires a lot of time to make necessary changes to legislation. Sometimes decisions can be quickly made, but it gets delayed because of giving rights to individuals present in the community. So, in a representative democracy, that time can be almost one year.

Focuses on the Needs of the Majority:

Within the structure of democracy, those who find themselves in the minority on the decision will feel that country doesn’t give attention to listening to their ideas or perspectives.

Hence if people consistently feel themselves in the minority, they begin to feel like a margin line or boundary has been created around them. So people in the majority must take first measures or actions to eradicate this taboo that is creating a majority-minority distinction.

Requires Well-informed Voters:

In a democracy, it is noticed that people cast a vote without having the necessary knowledge required for placing a vote. In this government structure, it is suggested that each casted vote should be well versed to make the whole process effective regarding the concerned subject matter.

Democracy Is a Person First Process:

When people are voting based on their relations, it creates discontent in society. It presents a notion that the majority is being suppressed by the minority. Therefore, legislation should be passed to protect the rights of individuals who find themselves outside.

Conclusion:

It is important to give importance to both the pros and cons of democracy to give people freedom of thought and action. But if that freedom comes at a high cost, then we must decide which sort of government fulfils the needs of a democratic society.
