The Decision to Attend College

The decision to choose a college or university is one of the most important decisions that a family can make today. On the other hand, taking a degree from these institutions takes a lot of time. Even most of the students need at least 4 years of education to get their job done. In this way, you will have a lot of expenses to consider.

A College Education is not Affordable for All

Even some of the families around us don’t afford to pay their children’s tuition fees and they might opt for an apprenticeship program instead. Others may get a job after completing education and then start working to gain experience for their career. These days several seniors are looking at the gig economy as a way to embrace their entrepreneurial future.

You must evaluate the pros and cons of attending a college education from your perspective. No one can tell you what is wrong and what is right about whatever choice you decide to make.

In this article, we are going to list down some of the potential benefits that you can receive after pursuing a college degree and some of the disadvantages in detail as well.

Pros and Cons of College

First of all, let’s have a look at some of the pros of attending college.

Chance to Make a Life for Yourself

When you decide to attend college, then you are putting yourself into a state of getting married. This refers to the fact that now you are less likely to live in the house of your parents in their early 20s.

Recent studies have shown that attending college has more economic benefits for Millennials rather than any previous generation. You got an opportunity to create an exquisite life for yourself because of the experiences that come up with these exciting learning possibilities.

Get Free Career Counseling Sessions

Most of the institutions these days provide free career counseling seminars and sessions. It also gives you a chance to get in touch with alumni and employers who can help you to find a job that exactly matches your education abilities.

The standard college also arranges an annual job fair that brings recruiters to the campus who are looking for qualified students to work with their organizations. This advantage gives you a chance to make bonds with representatives and also help you to grow professionally now and also in other fields in the future.

Room to Make Self-Improvements

For many students who decide to go to college, this will be the first time when they will be living more at their homes. This journey will become full of lessons and what it requires to be self-sufficient.

In this way, you will be able to learn how to manage your domestic affairs, meet your budget, and above all motivate yourself to complete homework assignments without taking the help of anyone. But still, you have the opportunity to call your siblings at home to get expert advice.

Leads to a Healthier Lifestyle

People who earn a bachelor’s degree live longer than people who do not continue their advanced education properly. Going to college means you are likely to do exercise and walk daily. In this, you keep yourself away from smoke.

People who earn a college degree at a time, they are less likely to suffer from depressive problems. So they rate themselves having better lifestyles when they reach 40 and 50.

Cons of Attending College

Attending college also brings about some disadvantages. Let’s have a look at a few of them.

Attending Classes is a Time-Consuming Experience

Most of the students these days need to manage at least 10 hours per week for studies and classes they decide to take. So you must make a considerable amount of time to work and be firm with your commitment.

If you need to get a job to continue your interests, then attending college is not a good decision.

Takes You Away from Close Friends

For some students being away from friends and family serves as a benefit. Therefore, going to college in this situation feels like a new and fresh start for yourself in life.

On the other hand, if you like staying at home then attending classes at your preferred institution is one of the most heart-wrenching experiences. Meeting new people always does not give you a good experience as compared to people with whom you have grown up.

Certain Jobs do not Require College Education

Bill Gates and Steve Jobs are people who don’t get a formal college education. On the other hand, there are many entertainers, celebrities, politicians, and professionals who have got exceptional success levels. Some of these attended either one or two semesters and then got dropped out.

The reason is that opportunities in life are so far different from what is available in the classroom. No doubt it is easier to secure a job once you get a college degree.

Moreover, there are plenty of people who have earned millions of dollars just because they enhanced their levels of creativity.

The Financial Burden is High Attending College

These days some developed countries in the world give students a chance to study for free at college or universities. This is not the case in the US and every student has to submit their fees at college unless they get a scholarship. But some students do not receive them out of aid and that they need to fulfill their college fees fully.

Moreover, it is not a good practice to reply to unsubsidized student loans to finance the expenses of earning a degree.

Conclusion

Therefore, going to college is worth it experience especially if you want to follow your dreams in life. Getting a college degree can also help you to knock the door of many jobs.

However, some creative fields can also help you in many ways as many universities and colleges give you a chance to practice your skills. Also, it is very important to keep in mind that your college degree should be your own decision otherwise you may regret it shortly. So, make sure you have multiple options when you apply for a job after getting a degree.
