Canada Anticipates an Increase in Immigration to Maximize the Country’s Economic Growth

Canada to increase immigration to boost economic recovery from the Covid 19 pandemic by welcoming more than 1.2 million immigrants between 2021 and 2023.

Earlier in the outbreak, Canada closed down its border to slow the spread of Covid-19, with non-citizens banned from visiting except in exceptional cases in March 2020. The country had anticipated settling 341,000 people in 2020 but only managed to do so for only 128,425 people.

Immigration is essential for the future of Canada

Marco Mendicino, Immigration Minister, said, ‘immigration is essential to getting us through the pandemic, but also to our short-term economic recovery and our long-term economic growth.

The country aims to add 401,000 new permanent residents this year and 411,000 in 2022, an increment of 50,000 compared to the previous targets. In the 1900s, the last time Canada attracted more than 400,000 people in one year time.

Immigration is essential for the future of the country. It allows skilled and qualified workers to support the employment needs of businesses. Thereby, it strengthens the economic growth of the country. Immigration in Canada also reunites families and encourages refugees to establish a new life.

Canada’s ministry plans to extend the number of new permanent citizens it takes over the next three years, and officials have taken steps in recent periods to advance the pace of permanent resident approvals, broadly by enticing on residents already in Canada temporarily.

In Canada, immigrants of all categories have positive outcomes across a set of economic indicators, including refugees. A report statistics in 2017, shows the labor force participation rates of immigrants aged 25 to 54 who settled more than 10 years earlier are comparable to those of the Canadian-born (86.9% vs. 88.4%).

The economic performance of all non-citizens improves with time spent in Canada.

Immigrants contribute to the economy, create jobs for Canadians

The strength of Canada’s economy is evaluated in a segment by the number of people working and paying taxes to fund public services, like health care.

Because of immigration, Canada’s labor force continues to rise by a small number every year. If there were no immigrants, the employers would have trouble finding sufficient qualified workers to fill available jobs. The reason is Canada’s aging population and decreasing birth rate. Hence, the pool of Canadian-born surviving and potential workers is restricted.

Canada has one of the loftiest adoption rates in the world. Around 85% of immigrants become citizens.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government counts on immigration to revitalize the country’s economy since coming to power in 2015, establishing an annual target of about 1% of the country’s population of approximately 38 million.

The country intends to take in over 400,000 permanent residents every year, higher than the earlier immigration goals set.

Candian Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino considers that this plan will help the country to make up for the disturbance that has been caused by COVID-19 in 2020.

Canadian Minister also stated that in part because of the uncertainty about when the borders will reopen, he would look at broadening and accelerating the pathway for immigrants already living in the country to obtain permanent residency.
