Biden’s New Immigration Proposal to Make Simpler Ways For Stem Graduates For Permanent Residency

President Joe Biden has revealed a long-awaited immigration plan. The plan is expected to make potential students interested in being a part of the STEM-related graduation course in the United States. On Thursday, the immigration plan has been overhauled comprehensively, and it has been criticized by both sides related to the aisle. However, the matter is that this plan is offering the path of citizenship in the United States to several people. Several residence-related boundaries have been analyzed, and through the implementation of the plan, these boundaries are expected to be mitigated. For instance, the plan is to eliminate the restriction on family-based immigration. Apart from that, the plan is expected to be helpful in regard to the process of expanding the visa of workers, and the U.S citizenship act 2021 is found to offer an eight-year pathway of citizenship to almost 11 million immigrants. However, one of the most significant parts of the plan is about the offerings that it is providing to STEM graduates. In this paper, a discussion regarding the offerings that this immigration plan provides to international STEM graduates is going to be illustrated.

How the New Immigration plan is supporting international STEM graduates

This immigration plan includes some practical measures that revise the policies developed by Donald Trump, the previous president of the United States. According to this new immigration plan, the students’ visa distribution process is going to be changed. Apart from that, Biden wants to eliminate the rule of per-country visa caps. However, amongst all of these changes, Biden has wanted to implement the change by providing STEM graduates with the chances to live in the United States permanently can be regarded as the most significant ones. As per the statistics related to the international students, it has been possible to understand that the UW currently has 8,000 international students, and they are holding either F-1 or J-1 student visas. Sharece Bunn, who is the assistant director for international student advising of ISS, UW, has noted that these visas that they are holding are the most common. Through an F-1 visa, a student gets the chance to enter the United States after getting the acceptance-related evidence from an accredited academic institution.

The acceptance evidence should show that they are coming to the United States for full-time study, and Bunn has stated that J-1 visas are common to cultural exchange visitors. However, the matter is that the possibility of getting permission related to permanent residency in the United States for students who have these visas cannot be ensured now as it is still unclear.  In this regard, Bunn has stated that students can get permission to live in the United States for a more extended period based on their educational performance and degree. Students who are doing an art-related study in the U.S and who have F-1 visas have chances to extend their living in the U.S for one year. However, STEM graduates get more facilities in this regard as they get one year for optional practical training after graduation and can get permission to live in the country for 24 more months. Though there is no separate system that can allow international students to get permanent residency, the concerned immigration plan can significantly change this obligation after being implemented. By considering the implication of the new approach and plan that Biden has proposed, Bunn and ISS have become excited. They think that this new plan could be beneficial to the UW University. It is a fact that several students come to the United States every year to continue their studies from a reputed university, and many of them want to be STEM graduates. Among these potential students, some want to live in the United States permanently. However, the matter is that there are many complexities that they face in regard to getting permanent residence in the United States. However, this new immigration plan is expected to help them in regard to such difficulties. In the following section, a discussion regarding this plan’s impact on international students’ decisions and thoughts will be elaborated while using proper examples.

Impact of the plan on the thoughts of foreign students

According to Mariel Tai, an international student, this new plan of Biden is just a sign of relief. At the beginning of the career, the person is stating that she wanted to accomplish her study from the United States, and she also has a hope to be a permanent resident of the United States. The plan is expected to help her to get the dream to come true. This is a story of not only Tai but also several students like her. It is a fact that several students cherish a dream to complete their studies from the United States, and many of them have a plan to permanently live in the U.S. They are getting a ray of hope after the immigration plan has been announced. In this regard, it is essential to state that some students are expected to be interested in changing their study path after implementing this plan. In other words, it can be stated that a significant number of students are expected to be involved in STEM-related study to make the path of getting permanent residency in the U.S clearer. Tai has stated that the goal of her was not to get a specific major. She was interested in staying in the United States. Such a willingness is sufficient to make a student interested in switching the carrier development path. After hearing that the STEM majors are granted more job opportunities, she has switched majors to STEM from the business. Tai is just an example as it is expected that more students are doing the same. However, it is expected that all of them will be able to get their dreams to come true, and the immigration plan would be successful in meeting its soul purposes.
