Biden and Brexit’s New Immigration System Attracting International Students

It looks like international students will benefit from Britain’s new immigration system and the election of Joe Biden as the US president.

Britain’s new immigration system and Joe Biden offer fresh opportunities to both the US and UK universities for admitting international students. A recent report published this week revealed this news to the world.

Fresh opportunities for international students

Dr. Rahul Choudaha, a Washington DC-based higher education analyst and director at the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), explained that the pandemic had created many problems for the international students. It has impacted the worldwide higher education system. It has left international students stranded all over the world in several countries for months after months. International students are unable to move from one country to another country.

It is expected that the fresh US and UK visa policies will help the nation’s universities to welcome international students in 2021.

Three incidents affected the mobility of international students

Dr. Choudaha Sona Sona exclaimed three incidents had affected international education worldwide. The global incidence has affected the mobility of international students. The first incident occurred in 2001. It was the much talked about 9/11 attack on the World Trade Centre in the US.

After the incident occurred in the US, the country lost its appeal to international students. The country was not safe anymore. Hence international students were not much interested in studying in the US universities.

The second incident was the global recession in 2008 and 2009. The US economy was severely damaged due to the reception. And that prompted the Western universities to invite international students. Somewhere down the line, international students brought foreign currencies and helped to recover the country’s frail economy.

The third incident was the Brexit referendum in 2016 and Donald Trump’s election as the US president. Donald Trump’s anti-immigration policies created a significant problem for international students.

Trump’s anti-immigration policies were so autocratic that they created massive US universities’ barriers to attracting international students.

As per Dr. Choudaha, the pandemic has created an unprecedented situation in the world. In the US, the pandemic has ravished the economy and the health scenario of the country. Pandemic has created a new wave of international mobility after the 9/11 attack, recession, and Donald Trump’s election.

International students are hopeful that the scenario will change

According to a survey conducted by the GMAC before the US election, 24% of international students indicated that they were more likely to apply in the US universities if Joe Biden is elected as the new President of America.

International students are irritated and frustrated with Donald Trump’s anti-immigration policies. If Donald Trump were elected as the 46th president of the US, then the situation would have deteriorated for the international students. However, the situation has turned in their favor, and Joe Biden has come to power.

Even before Joe Biden was elected as the President of the US, he proposed a series of plans to revive the US’s education system. Joe Biden indeed has to use his executive powers to change the country’s economic and education scenario. But at least he is in favor of welcoming international students in the country. And that has given fresh hope to the global students.

On the other hand, Britain’s new immigration policy is developing post-Brexit pathways for international students. The much talked about graduate route visa will allow international students to stay in the UK after completing their higher studies for two years and develop their skills. That is a significant attraction for international students.

New visa and immigration policies to welcome international students

Thank god that 2020 is over. That was the year when many people lost their lives and livelihoods. Moreover, that was when all the countries imposed strict immigration rules, which affected the mobility of international students.

However, now all the countries are gradually thinking about the new immigration policies to welcome international students. The global economy is down. The national GDP is also down. The only way to overcome the Senado is to recruit international students.

If you analyze from a closer perspective, you will realize that the new immigration policies were reversing the third wave in 2016.

International students are considering the US and UK as a favorable destination for higher studies. It may create stiff competition amongst the countries for attracting the attention of international students. The goal is to recruit international students and make money. It is not that the countries are concerned about the future of international students. What they are worried about is the money that they have lost during the pandemic.

In the first half of 2020, almost all the countries ignored and harassed international students. They were only concerned about their domestic students and public safety.

After a year has passed, countries have realized the importance of international students with respect to the global economy. Now they are introducing immigration policies that will help international students complete their studies and build their careers.

The uncertainty of Covid-19 and the US and UK’s political unrest is creating the fourth wave of international mobility. It is expected that the new visa and immigration policies will attract international students to the US and UK.

The changing scenario may influence international students’ decision who are thinking about doing their higher studies in the US or in the UK. The US and UK universities have lucrative opportunities to reap profits in the future. All they need to do is monitor the changing landscape, develop infrastructure, and make arrangements for international students’ safety and security.

Conclusion

A shift in the education scenario was required. The introduction of a new visa and immigration policies was also long-awaited. If everything goes according to the plan, international students will soon start boarding flights to the US and UK.

Hopefully, from April 2021, international students will get more opportunities to study in foreign countries without any trouble.
