1. Highlight your major achievements

Hiring managers want to know how you define success. For this reason, they want to know your achievement concerning the communication field. If you have a proven track record in a communication role, then you can answer this question effectively. However, if you are new to this field, you need to do understand the job requirements and company details.

In response, you can say, I worked as a volunteer coordinator in a non-profit company. The role was important, and it required me to work alongside fundraisers. The company was raising funds for homeless families and children. I communicated with donors, and provided them with all the relevant details both verbally and through documents. Due to my efforts and communication abilities, I managed to raise $30,000 in just one month. I consider it my major achievement in the communication role.

2. What are the essential skills for communication-based positions?

Interviewers want to know how well can you communicate in a communication-related job. In response, you can say that both hard and soft skills are necessary for communication jobs. I value both types of skills. I have learned the importance of soft skills such as listening to people, empathy, etiquette, courtesy, and so on.

Hard skills such as formal writing and computer literacy are also essential for an employee. Proficiency in preparing documents using computers is companies’ demand in this modern age of technology.

3. Where do you place yourself as a communication professional in the next five years?

This question aims to evaluate your commitment and dedication to the communication-based job. Large organizations seek candidates who can work with them in the long-run. Hiring managers expect you to provide an answer, which indicates that you would remain loyal to this company if they hire you. If you are a beginner, you can say, I would want to start my career as a communication officer. But I would acquaint myself with the skills necessary to excel as a true professional. In the next 5 years, I see myself in a management role based on my performance and hard work. I know the importance of complying with the company’s rules and policies. I would develop an understanding of the company’s business, structure, and overall requirements. With time, I would progress to the senior position.

4. Describe an occasion of conflict and how would you resolve the conflicting issue?

The interviewers want to know if you can stay calm while working under pressure. You should reflect empathy and problem-solving skills through your answer. Managing conflict refers to understanding the other person’s viewpoint.

Response: I always prefer to get a complete understanding of the situation, and then I listen to the other party’s narrative. Once I get complete information, I would suggest the solution under the company’s policies, rules, and regulations to resolve the conflict.

5. What efforts will you make to ensure success in a communication role?

Communication jobs demand consistency and commitment from the candidates. The interviewers expect you to play an active role while working as a communication professional. I work hard to improve my communication skills. For this purpose, I attend different workshops and seminars. Additionally, I read articles containing industry-specific information and details.

6. Do you have experience of working with the press or media?

Interviewers prefer to hire professional candidates. If you do not have media or press experience, highlight writing skills that you could employ to the role you have applied for. In reply, you can say: I have worked as a communication volunteer for a small non-profit organization. I drafted the press releases for fundraisers. It was my first experience, but I managed to meet the company’s requirements. I worked alongside managers; with their guidance, I was able to improve my skills and learned how to draft a press release.

7. Can you work effectively within the company’s budget?

The interviewers expect you to demonstrate your knowledge of the company’s budget and how employees work in limited resources.

Response: In my last role as a volunteer coordinator in a non-profit organization, I had to work within a limited budget. The company did not have enough financial resources to hire candidates. As a result, I helped them to hire five more people through my network. I used various social media contacts and groups for this purpose.

8. How do you stay organized?

Communication professionals have to deal with the company’s internal departments and external clients. Convey to them that you always prioritize tasks and perform your duties as per the company’s policies and rules.

9. Why do you consider yourself suitable for this position?

In response, demonstrate your written and verbal skills according to the job requirements.

10. Are you familiar with different social media outlets? If so, express your knowledge.

Knowledge of industry trends is important for communication roles. Describe your knowledge about major social media platforms.

Final Word

Interviews for communication jobs aim to evaluate your written and verbal communication skills. Before attending the interview session, thoroughly read and understand job requirements, and provide answers in line with those requirements.
