Project Description

The University of Hertfordshire’s School of Humanities is committed to supporting Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) students. BAME students are underrepresented at postgraduate research level within the School, only making up 8% of PhD students instead of 57% of undergraduate and 34% of postgraduate taught students. Across the sector, BAME individuals account for only 4.6% of academics in History.

There are many ways to increase diversity in research careers. We strongly encourage applications from people who identify with additional protected characteristics, those from areas with traditionally low participation in higher education, and people who are the first in their family to study at university.

Areas of supervisory expertise

We have diverse supervisory expertise and are in principle open to applications on any topic in History. Potential applicants may nonetheless wish to consider the research interests and expertise of the faculty. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • twentieth-century Irish political History; twentieth-century everyday life; migration history; public History and heritage studies; histories of medicine and health; Australian history; twentieth-century international history; film and History; a history of women, gender and the family in the eighteenth century to the present; sexuality and religion in the Atlantic world; medicine and the body in the seventeenth century; the history of the supernatural, popular religion, and popular medicine in the early modern and modern periods; democratic and social movements and popular protest from the eighteenth century to the present; landscape and environmental heritage; urban History and town planning; gender, race and sexuality in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries; the British Empire; colonial South Asia; law and crime.
