Turkey Removes Admission Restrictions for International Students

May 16, 2019 //  by Amit Kumar

Turkey has removed the limit that was put by its government on international students. Now a large number of international students can go to Turkey for higher studies. This new act will generate high revenue for the country and helps to boost up its economy.

Turkey has set its goal to become an education hub, and this is a positive step towards progress. Some time ago, Turkey has announced the restriction on numbers of international students, but now they have finally decided to remove it.

Turkish Government wants to attract more international students to come and study there, according to the country’s Council of Higher Education (YOK). The main goal of the country is to become the centre of attraction for higher education possibilities.

The universities are thinking to add English-language courses and many more beneficial steps to encourage international students.

The announcement included the point that the university will take a lot of international students only if their numbers do not exceed 50% of overall students. All universities used to define an annual limit for new students.

According to a report stated that universities with ample amenities to take a considerable number of students and engage criteria for education standards would be permitted to accept any number of students into these categories, giving a separate class for them.

Yekta Sarac who is president of the Council of Higher Education (YOK), revealed that YOK has taken the first step for international students and set up the international relation department and drafting a strategic plan together. He believes that Turkey will be the center of attraction for higher studies.

The more Sarac said that he believes they are leading successful methods. Since the 1980s, turkey confirmed agreements with 34 different countries for collaboration in the education sector and to raise the number of international students.

They want that more and more international students come to turkey for their higher education purposes. The identification of our universities, particularly in neighbouring countries, improved and we notice much better results from our initiatives to make Turkey more recognized for its universities in Africa and the Balkans, the president said.

Sudden progress has in the number of international students in turkey. In 2017-2018. The number of international students was 125,138 in turkey according to statistics released by YOK last year.

Sarac added that this is the outcome of the firm plan, a new student and lecturer exchange program, refreshed certified diploma regulations, new scholarships and initiatives to bring qualified international lecturers performed a vital role in the development.

Ayse Deniz Ozkan who is the vice director for Global Education and Partnerships at Istanbul Aydin University and coordinator of EURIE perceived that there would be a massive increase in the number of international students after lifting the limit and restriction on the undergraduate programs.

Though, it is a vital point that universities are individually making their right internationalization policy that will suit them. Some universities are going to add English-language programs, and most of the international students will participate.

Ozkan more stated that we may notice over-concentration of international students in specific study fields. These may produce new tests for university administrations. It will be up to the universities themselves to drive through this new era by establishing the appropriate admissions criteria and competitive tuition fees and by proposing quality academic programs, and more assistance and support arrangements for international students, Ozkan said.
